Welcome to Metru Nui, City of Legends

2004 is shaping up to be a big Bionicle year

For the last three years, we've followed LEGO's adventure of the Toa, Turaga and Matoran of Mata Nui. The surprise hit Bionicle flourished, culminating with LEGO's first movie, BIONICLE: Mask of Light. With 2004 almost here, LEGO is ushering in a brand new era for Bionicle: forward, into the past, with Metru Nui, City of Legends. Spoiler alert!

A new island, new characters, new incarnations of old characters, new adversaries, and a new set of collectibles await us in the new year. In fact, the first wave have already hit stores, these new "Metruan" (Metru Nui Matoran), with the next wave coming in February with Toa Vakama and company.

The story begins at the end of the Mask of Light movie, followed by comics. An underground ocean of silvery protodermis surrounds an island city, Metru Nui. Turaga Vakama, the elder of vanished Ta-Koro, tells the stunned Toa they were not the first Toa... the Turaga of Mata Nui were once Matoran of the city of Metru Nui, then Toa themselves. They were chosen (by whom is not specified - yet) to become Toa, mighty warriors who would need to save the city from the mysterious Morbuzakh, an insidious plant destroying Metru Nui a bit at a time. As with the later Toa, these Toa Metru need to collect talismans of power, the Great Kanoka Disks. According to legend, only the power of the six great disks hidden throughout the city can combine to defeat the king root of the Morbuzakh and save the city.

This story focuses on the Time Before Time, when Metru Nui is besieged by more than a plant. Mystery and lies await at the heart of Metru Nui, and we'll see more of this in 2004's direct-to-video production of Metru Nui: City of Legends in the Fall, complete with new bad guys.

    A New Direction

LEGO is also revitalizing the interactive interest in Bionicle with several new marketing items. Each new Toa, for example, contains a Kanoka Card which is either an instant winner (for home electronics, etc.) or contains "points" that you collect after signing up on Bionicle.com. And the recent press kit also contained an intriguing poster of Mata Nui superimposed over Metru Nui - look at it one way, it's one island, shift your perspective slightly and it's another. This is a welcome addition, gimmicky though it is, and is sure to help fan the interest for the new story and sets.
