    Set Review: 9465 The Zombies
ReviewTuesday, September 18th, 2012 at 7:06pm by Andrew, BZPower News Manager
    [Source: Sisen]

It's time for another Monster Fighters review. Sisen is at it again, taking a look at 9465 The Zombies for all to see. All they want to do is eat your brains, can the cybernetic hunters stop them? Read on to find out!

    Presentation
From the design of the box to the instruction manual, these are the first things you see before building the set.

    Br... Braaaa... Braaaaaaains...

Hello my name is Jack McHammer, and I'll be your emcee or compere for this here assessment. What I am about to unveil to you is a set so monstrous that it had to be released later on after the other Monster Fighters, because the risk for infection was too great. What you are about to see may frighten you. If I had not an arm of steel, I may have fainted.

    Behold! The zo-

    Braaaaaaains...

    Zombies!

These supernaturally undead somehow living foes are not to be toyed with. Use extreme caution, unless you are at least eight to fourteen years old. Piece of advice, do not step on any of the four hundred and forty seven pieces... That hurts worse than a Zombie taking a bite out of you! On the upside you do not get turned into a plastic brick... Wait no that'd be cool.

This appears to be one bad end to a wedding. There's a Zombie Bride, Zombie Groom, and their escort Zombie Driver... I am afraid to admit this is a grisly scene indeed. Things are torn apart, bits are hanging each and every way, and the stench is unbearable.

Hang on and prepare as the grave-robbing for the Zombie Moonstone begins!

    Building
Half the fun is had building the set. How fun is it to build and how easy or challenging is it?

There are four different stages of building for the Zombies and a single manual for assembling. In our first installment we have the dread Zombies and my McHammer car which was torn to pieces by you know who. First, you can see me, Mr. Jack McHammer, with chiseled good looks, rugged man-beard, flannel shirt, and sterling metal arm. My shirt is even printed on my back.

    Braaaaaaains...

The Zombies are a gnarly sight to behold indeed, but luckily they stay together better than most decaying corpses. The Zombie bride is most brutally beaten up. Her dress is torn to shreds and her face appears to be falling off. She does utilize a slope for the lower portion of her dress to give it the authentic look. The Zombie Groom appears to have fared better than his bride-to-be, with an intact ascot, vest, dress shirt, and cummerbund. Perhaps his bride attacked him and he did not fight back? Lastly, we have the Zombie driver, who appears a bit more ramshackle than the groom. While I am not sure what is going on with his right reddish-brown hand, it pales in comparison to my automaton arm.

Now we have finally reached my bride -er pride and joy! The McHammer automobile! Hammering and Impacting Your Abominations, I call her HIYA! for short. HIYA! is my own custom ride with the help of some brilliant designers. She has a straightforward makeup, driver's seat, steering mechanism, engine, and four wheels, but there are some big improvements. During the conceptualization of the vehicle known as HIYA two giant rotating hammers, missiles, and a battering ram were added to my baby. What is not taken out by the huge splash grill on the front is going to get whack-a-moled by one of two giant hammers.

Oh no- Wait- Where- My hammers, where are they!? They're missing!

Oh wait- their components are still in their packaging. The McHammer automobile, hammering and impacting your abominations, HIYA! is completed and not a moment too soon!

    Braaaaaaains...

The Zombies take up the remaining three components to assemble their cemetery. The caskets have a simple construction and can open to reveal the zombie contained inside.

Do you see what I see? It is a cemetery, almost a mausoleum, for the Zombies... The construction to it is primitive and the monsters it contains are un-deadly. Everything about this place gives off a vibe of evil. There are decaying vines, gah a spider, and even a bat... Strange... Could it possibly be Dracula?!

Putting together the graveyard is not a complicated task. It is so easy a Zombie could do it and they do not have any higher brai-

Hold on! I am going in for the Zombie Moonstone! HIYA!

    Set Design
Now that the set is complete, we can critique how it looks from every angle. New or interesting pieces can also be examined here.

    As I've said before-

    Braaaaaaains...

Be quiet! I am trying to comment on the design of your death bed, go moan somewhere else! The Zombies all contain new pieces. The bride's hair is dark tan and a first for that hair style, along with her torn bridal gown. Everything but the driver's hat is a new item as well! Unfortunately, the only new pieces for the groom are his head and torso. You would think his pants would be torn up. Of course, everything I'm wearing is new, minus my hat.

9465 The Zombies Review 56 9465 The Zombies Review 57 9465 The Zombies Review 58

You cannot see it on the inner workings of the tomb, but the mechanism contains two tan technic bevel gears. They are not new pieces but a cool piece to find in a system set. There of course is the dreadful undead Zombie Moonstone which controls the mechanism to open the tombs. I'm fairly particular about things - it is nigh to impossible for the Zombie Moonstone to be lined up straight and have the tombs shut at the same time.

Eeegad! That spider glows in the dark! Arachnophobes beware!

9465 The Zombies Review 59 9465 The Zombies Review 60

Overall there is a nice batch of different blocks in this set for building structures. There are some of the newer black 2x1 slopes within the Zombie tomb. HIYA contains one of the black slope guards seen in more recent years, plus a new dark wedge roof. Her engine is even made of modified flat silver plates with angular tubes!

    Playability
The other half of the fun is in playing with the set. How well does the set function and is it enjoyable to play with?

Whoa what just happened?! Everything went dark! Oh no! These are not your run-of-the-mill Zombies... They can build themselves back together. I have been locked in their tomb and they drove off in my precious HIYA! ! !

It is good to see their brains are still not intact. They left their precious Zombie Moonstone behind for me!

    Final Thoughts
Once it's all said and done, how does the set stack up? Should I get it?

    Pros
    What's to like?

    • Zombies
    • Braaaaaaains...
    • Interactive functions
    • Technic Gears used!
    • Zombies
    • Zombies
    • ZOMBIES
    • HIYA! (Cool car)

    Cons
    What's not to like?

    • Nuuuu Braaaaaaains...
    • Zombie Bride doesn't fit in casket
    • Hard to fit in other Zombies too

The Zombies is a completely abysmal set in terms of how awesome LEGO Zombies are. While there are not a whole lot of new pieces included, the well-rounded design and horror flick nature make up for a lot. The interactive features of the set are a bonus. Opening graves... Flying cauldrons with decomposed remains... and who does not love a car with giant rotating massive hammers to smite with?

This is Jack McHammer signing off. Live strong Monster Fighters and do not let what creeps in the night get you!

    Wanted: Monster Fighters Alert!

We have an unconfirmed sighting of a mysterious hand. Please proceed with caution. If sighted dose with holy water and garlic.

And that wraps it up for today. Of course be sure to thank Sisen and ask any questions in the Talkback. Please keep checking back on BZPower for more Monster Fighters reviews and other LEGO news!
