Bio-Cup 2021 Round 1 Part 2
Sunday, June 27th, 2021 at 3:14am
Bio-Cup 2021's Round 1 finished a few days ago, and the second round is already underway. Of course, since nobody posts their creations until the last minute, we won't have anything to feature for a while... but we still have a lot of MOCs from Round 1 that we can share. I've put together another selection of cool builds, but there are so many that I'll have to split this up into multiple stories! Today we'll focus on some of the entries that the Judges didn't select, but that doesn't make them any less amazing. The subthemes we'll focus on will be 3D Art, Books, Comics, and Music.
Tribal Mask by Aiden.Builds Subtheme: 3D Art
This tribal mask has some very distinct coloring and shaping to it that come together into a very solid creation. I especially like the curved yellow and red lines around the eyes, and it certainly looks like an exotic tribal mask.
Glassblower by moc_imiku Subtheme: 3D Art
The big eyecatcher here is certainly the spiral of Kaukau masks (including all of the misprints, impressive collection.) But the glassblower guy himself is actually very solid, from his Rahkshi spine jeans and Komau apron to his spiked hair. The design is simple but also very clean, I like it a lot!
The Transportation of the Past by Luterem Subtheme: 3D Art
If you're into Technic, you're probably used to seeing a lot of vehicle builds, but these are cooler because of the clever use of Bionicle elements. The plane in particular has a lot of CCBS shells integrated into the design, and the odd technical look to some of them fits right in with the astatic of the design. The car relies on a few more System elements but has some nice curvature that you wouldn't see in a pure Technic build. Both of these are quite well done!
The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sharreek Mocs Subtheme: Books
I'm a sucker for a Hound of the Baskervilles, one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes stories. This build does look a bit more robotic than organic, especially with the various use of the tubes, but they shape it very well and would probably look very intimidating in the dark. I especially like the various flame elements dripping from its mouth, very reminiscent of the story.
The God Emperor of Dune by Johann Dakitsch Subtheme: Books
The spiky structure of this character is really well done and more than a little creepy, and the shaping they managed really sells the movement of the thing rising out of the ground. Knowing how temperamental those clips are, I'm sure the build is very fragile, so that makes the shaping even more impressive. This is some great nightmare fuel.
Johnny Lightfoot by optimus-convoy Subtheme: Comics
I'm not familiar with the comic this is from, but the character is strong enough without that context. The rabbit head itself is very detailed for such a small space, and I really like the texture on the jacket that kind of makes it look ruffled. The pose also works really well; this is one tough bunny that you don't want to cross!
Comic Entry by Geogg Gordon Subtheme: Comics
Is this a Carnage that has broken out of the forth wall of the comics to invade our reality? The design itself is really cool, from the textured abs to the crazy head. I also appreciate the various comic book scenes built into the background, which would be decent vignettes all on their own. Hope Spider-Man can web this one up before he causes too much trouble!
JJ the Musician by Elf Melter Subtheme: Music
This is a one-monkey (robot?) band right here. The various instruments are all well done, and I like the design of the character and his many arms, who looks like he's having a good time playing a tune. Rock on, robot monkey, rock on!
The Drvil Went Down to Georgia by MySnailEatsPizza Subtheme: Music
It seems very fitting that this iconic song got made into a MOC. (Actually, there were two, but alas this one did not win.) The devil himself has a fun design, especially with the head and eyes, while the base is very solid with the nice burst of fire going on in the background. I can already imagine him playing his music with an evil hiss!
Rockin' and Rollin' by Will Hafner Subtheme: Music
The build here is fairly basic, but there's a lot done here that I really like. Building around a Galidor torso was risky, but I like the red and teal color scheme they used, and the minifig Furno helmets as hands work really well. The Hero Factory shield piece also seamlessly works with the guitar, and the Kraata container lids on the speakers are very inspiring. This MOC definitely deserves its moment in the spotlight!
We've got a lot more MOCs to feature from Bio-Cup Round 1, so make sure to stay tuned to BZPower to see more of them. And keep an eye out for entries for Round 2 coming in a few weeks. The entries this year are just getting better and better!
