LEGO Group Reveals Prototype Brick Made from Recycled Bottles
Hot Bionicle NewsPosted on Thursday, June 24th, 2021 at 9:35am by Andrew, BZPower News Manager

Yesterday, The LEGO Group revealed the first prototype LEGO brick made from recycled plastic, a major step in its sustainability efforts. The bricks are made from Polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, that has been sourced from used plastic bottles that would normally hold soda or water at the grocery store. Engineers and scientists at TLG have developed a, "patent-pending material formulation [that] increases the durability of PET to make it strong enough for LEGO bricks," since normally PET would not have the same strength and other characteristics found in Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) that have made it ideal for bricks since the 1950s. While this is a great first step, there's still a long way to go, including figuring out if and how the material can be colored to match existing LEGO bricks. This is a great development and I look forward to hearing more in the future!
