Bio-Cup 2021 Round 1 Part 1

Bio-Cup 2021's Round 1 is underway, and folks are already building towards the theme, Media & Entertainment. We have a little less than a week to go, but most builders are already playing into secrecy by not showing their builds until the last minute. But a few have posted, and you know what they say, the early MOC gets the feature. Read on to see some of the cool early entries for Round 1!
Matthias of Redwall by Ballom Nom Nom Subtheme: Books
Redwall was a popular series about woodland animals in various adventures. Matthias is a warrior mouse, and the design really shows off his noble nature. The head is superbly detailed, but I am also a fan of the smooth leg design too. This guy is certainly going to defend his homeland well!
Galactus: The Starved by McLegoboy Subtheme: Comics
Galactus has had a huge presence in comics before, and the Star Wars planet really sets the scale for him here. There's some nice color blocking with the blacks and purples, and the use of the skeleton torso element on the head is very fun. I also appreciate the lighting choice, which helps create the tone for the image. It's feeding time now!
Wasp Wing Table Lamp by Ted Andes Subtheme: 3D Art
You know a MOC is good when you have to double-check to verify that it is built out of LEGO. The use of the bug wings as the lampshade is very clever, but it's the twisted tail pieces at the base that really sells this MOC. Everybody will want this on their desk!
Bionicle Comics by Oksusu02 Subtheme: Comics
This entry is sticking with a purely Bionicle format, but portrays it very well in a comic book style page! The various characters and their poses are all really well done, although I especially like Matoro and Takanuva. I also appreciate how Makuta is reaching over the panel border and how both he and Takanuva have brick-built thought bubbles! A quite clever take with a lot of nice Bionicle nostalgia.
Out Shadows Guide Us by Fuzz-E Subtheme: Art / Paintings
This is a fantastic scene based on a Munch painting. The main character has a simple pose with Scala clothing that works really well, and the shadow monster looks very creepy with his cape and pose. But the backdrop is what really sells the model and gives you a sense of the atmosphere in which these characters live. Plus, it's fun to find all the Bionicle elements hidden away in the design. A very well developed setup!
The Blossom Fairy by David Doci Subtheme: Art / Paintings
The fairy takes center stage in this MOC, with a nice frilly dress design. But the tree in the background is just as detailed and contains a lot of nice part usages. Overall, this creation has a nice serene look to it.
Death Angel by Oblivion Subtheme: Live Action Shows / Movies
Pulled from the movie "A Quiet Place", this creature is quite formidable and frightening. The sleek black limbs with the spider-leg fingers are very menacing, but the red head with the gear teeth is what really stands out. Better not make a sound or else this thing will find you!
Pet Metal by Djokson Subtheme: Art / Paintings
Inspired by Ashley Wood's work, these are two interesting characters. The black one makes use of some interesting texture with the repeating CCBS shells on the arms and the backwards Vader helmet with a golden ring as an eye. His companion's white and lime coloring contrasts nicely, with a small but effective feminine design. Quite impressive.
The Vraal by Jayfa Subtheme: Books
This lizard-like creature is from the book series Deltora Quest and quite menacing. The angles on the head are what really catches the eye, but I was also impressed by the scale-texture of the CCBS shells on the tail (and honestly a little jealous that I haven't been able to make CCBS shells do something that great.) The dark green and tan color scheme really works, as does the pose in general. Yet another creature you wouldn't want to come across!
This has been the first batch of entries for the First Round. Of course, there are bound to be some excellent ones being posted right up to the entry deadline, so I'm sure I'll be able to fill out a couple more stories full of featured MOCs. So stay tuned to see what amazing things people build up next!
